Hello! My name is Gordon Hay, a retired lawyer. I am a native Doric speaker and consider myself bi-lingual in English and Doric. I have an intimate knowledge of the culture and language of the North-east of Scotland and have been involved in promoting Doric through memberships of local societies. I am a former chairman of the Charles Murray Memorial Fund, President of The Buchan Field Club, an Honorary President of The Buchan Heritage Society and treasurer of The Doric Board. In the 2025 New Year’s Honours List I was awarded an MBE for services to the Doric Language.
In addition to the above, I have published a variety of books and been commissioned to translate a wide variety of works into Doric.
My main claim to fame is, I was the first person ever to translate the whole Bible into any variation of the Scots language.

Doric Board chairwoman Frieda Morrison said: “As one of the founding members of the board, we are incredibly proud of all that Gordon continues to achieve and we are honoured that the board benefits from his experience and insight.”
